Lagos Declares Free Medication for Sickle Cell Patients, Enacts Policy




As a good step in the right direction, the Lagos State Government has announced its plan to give free medical treatments to all children under 12 years living with the Sickle Cell Disease (SCD) in the state. Dr. Eniola Erinosho, Director of Disease Control, Lagos State, made this disclosure to Journalists during the World Sickle Cell Day, commemorated recently all around the world.

Erinosho who described the period between 0-12 years as the most prevalent in SCD crisis, said the state is ready to give succour to the parents of these children at such challenging time.


Furthermore, he noted enlightenment campaign in secondary schools and through the media as key component of the policy, to create the awareness of the disorder among young persons who are yet to be committed to marital issues, in order for them to make the right choices in life.

 “We have finalised the treatment guideline for the management of Sickle Cell Disorders and machinery has also been put in place towards developing a comprehensive state policy on Hemoglobinopathies. A key component of this policy would be support for enlightenment activities at all levels with particular emphasis on young persons who are yet to be committed in marriage to their partners”, he stated.

A determined Erinosho who assured the patients of the readiness of the state to bring holistic care their way  said any sickle cell sufferer under the cover of the free treatment, who is deny attention in any government hospital should feel free to call him on his mobile line which he publicly gave to the audience at the lecture.
