Artistes, Others Differ On Celebration Of Valentine’s Day

Some celebrities and other artistes on Wednesday expressed divergent views on the celebration of St. Valentine’s Day every February 14 and how they intend to spend the day.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that while some were indifferent, others said it was a special day and looked forward to the celebration.

The National Publicity Secretary, National Association of Nigerian Theatre Arts Practitioners (NANTAP), Ozi Okoli, told NAN that there was nothing special about the day.
“In as much as I know about the celebration, there is nothing special about it.
“I am not just excited about the season; to me, you do not make just a day special for somebody you are in love with.

“Love is not something you can celebrate in just one day, it is absurd; I live every day of my life with love and every day is Valentine’s Day to me,” Okoli said.
He, however, said he was not against those who celebrate the Day.
“I am not against the celebration; I wish those who like to celebrate it a happy celebration, I wish them good luck,” he said.
Tony Okuyeme, an actor, told NAN that the day was to him, a time to show love.
“Valentine’s day is a time to show love in a special way; that is why I have decided to spend that day with my lovely family.
“Most of the time, I am at work or on locations, so this is a day on which I want to really be with them and give them love.
“I am not saying I do not do that on other days, but since people are celebrating, let me join them,” he said.
Okuyeme noted that it was good to celebrate love, which was needed to enhance unity in the country.
A music producer and gospel singer, Emmanuel Afemikhe, said the day was a time to share love, but he would be busy with his work.
“I will be celebrating my own valentine’s day inside the studio as I will be rehearsing for a concert and my album lunch.
“I certainly do not have the time to celebrate the day,” he said.
The Chief Executive Officer, Naijacommunity Network, a communication outfit, Victor Maranzu, told NAN that it was like a normal day to him.
“There is nothing special about Valentine’s Day; it is just a normal day like every other day and I don’t know why the craze for it.
“I will be at work on that day; there is nothing special about it and I can’t stop my normal daily activities because of Valentine’s Day celebration.”
According to him, the hype about the day is too much, and is not even necessary.
“We should always endeavour to reach out to the less privileged in the society,” he said.
A trader, Mr. Emeka Udensi, said that Valentine’s Day was confusing to him.
“There is no hanging out for me on that day because I will be at my shop working.
“I have goods to supply and unfortunately, I am to supply it that day; I need money so there will be no hanging out for me on that day,” he said.
According to a business woman, Mrs. Kike Aderibigbe, she celebrates with her husband every day.
“Valentine Day doesn’t make much meaning to me because I don’t wait for a particular day to celebrate him,” she said.
Meanwhile, many shops, hotels, supermarkets restaurants, eateries and event centres in Lagos have been beautified with red coloured decorations in preparation for the day.
NAN reports that February 14 is used annually to celebrate love in many parts of the world and many Nigerians have keyed into it.
It is a day on which people, families, friends, loved ones and well-wishers spend time together and hang out in exciting places.
