Vice President Osinbajo Talks Tough on Ending Religious Conflicts in Nigeria

The Vice President, Professor Yemi Osinbajo has described the various religious conflicts and killings in the country, as the mega agenda of the devil to make the preaching of the gospel of Christ an impossible mission in Nigeria.

The Vice President, who made the assertion at the official commissioning  of the Deeper Life Bible Church Ultra Modern Auditorium in Gbagada, Lagos, said he has got the president's mandate to get to the root of such crises in the country.

His words:"There are resistance to the building of churches, in fact there are specific cases/ states, where embargo has been placed on church building, and the president has mandated me that I take up such cases".

He admonished  the church to rise to her responsibility of evangelising the world, as it is the plan of the devil to ensure that this mission is defeated.

He said :"We are in the end time, and indeed the time of His return is closer than when we first believe. The immediate implication of this is that there must be urgency in the fulfilment of the great commission. As we are all enjoined to obey the injunction.

"As we endeavour to fulfil the great commission, we must accept that there are resistance and the devil is more desperate and defiant as the end draws nearer".

Recalling the incident that led to the gruesome murder of a Catholic Priest by armed killers during a burial mass in Benue State recently, he pledged the commitment of all security leaders to fish out the evil men involved in the wicked act.

"All the security leaders will continue to work relentlessly to bring to book the perpatrators of this evil act, and to bring a permanent end to all of the killings that are going on in the country, in the name of herdsmen, Boko Haram, or any other group".

The Vice President did not fail to seek for the prayers and support of the church, saying governance is a spiritual warfare.Reading from the Holy Scriptures the account of Queen Esther in Shushan, he said believers in government are referred to as Esther. And as Esther asked for prayers to be offered on her behalf, he beseeched the brethren to always pray for all Christians in government.

"This I say to the church, that the church prays for those in government, that the church upholds the hands of those in government, not by blaming them, but supporting them in the place of prayer, because governance is spiritual warfare. If anyone does not know that, I know that governance is a spiritual warfare.I ask that you pray for every one of us who is in the position of authority", he pleaded.

The General Superintendent of the Deeper Life appreciated all members of the church for their sacrificial and generous contribution towards the building of the new church auditorium. He also urged other churches to follow the good example of Deeper Life by incorporating Corporate Social Responsiblity into their evangelisation of their communities.

The high point of the event was the unveiling of the new logo of the church, which was heralded by the super performance of the Youth Choir.

Deeper Life International Headquarters to Be Commissioned on April 24

Contrary to early speculations about the official commissioning of the Deeper Life Christian Ministry’s International Headquarters, located on  2- 10, Ayodele Okeowo, Gbagada, Lagos, the Church has announced the new date for the ceremonial opening of the 45,000 capacity wonder cathedral.

Topsyoba.com gathers via the Church’s Monday Bible Study Broadcast on 9 April, that the new date for the official commissioning of the ultra modern auditorium is fixed for 24 April, 2018, as against the February 2014 and 2017 watch night service previously announced, by some media reports.

The unique church auditorium will be commissioned by 11:00am, under the distinguished chairmanship of his Excellency, Governor Akinwunmi Ambode, with other side attractions like special musical cantata by the Deeper Life Choir, and other dignitaries in attendance. However, attendance would be strictly by invitation.

The interesting thing about the commissioning is that everyone can be viewing the ceremony from anywhere they are through the following platforms:
  • LTM Transmission
  • Webcast.dclm.org
  • YouTube.com/dclmhq
  • twitter.com/dclmhq
  • facebook.com/dclmhq
According to an inside source, the construction of the cathedral commenced about 13 years ago, and the structure was later expanded along the line to accommodate an underground park, which  would take  about 160 cars.

Built like a stadium, our source revealed that the construction of the Deeper Life Christian Ministry International Headquarters costs nothing less than over N4 billion, with every kobo of it generated from the pockets of church members in Nigeria with generous contributions from Deeper Life churches abroad.

Topsyoba.com reports that the commissioning of the Deeper Life International Headquarters is coming barely two months, after the Lagos State Governor Ambode, commissioned multiple projects executed by the Church in the Gbagada area of Lagos.

Projects commissioned by the Governor included a link bridge on Oduwaiye Street, Gbagada, traffic lights on a number of streets and a 600 capacity multilevel car park, all built from the contributions of members of the church across the country.

The execution of these projects beat the Governor’s imagination so much, that he has urged all
other religious groups and private sector organizations in the state, to follow the Deeper Life example and  provide similar support to the government, adding that a lot will be achieved and in a very short time in improving the quality of infrastructure in the state.

CAN Condemns Sukkuk Bond, Says It Is A Ploy to Islamise Nigeria

The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has  again raised grounds of objection to what it described as ‘the  unrelenting plan of the Federal Government of Nigeria to introduce Islamic financing into a secular state in violation of Section 10 of the Constitution’.\

According to this section in the Constitution, the Nigerian State is Secular and Government is expected to be neutral on issues involving religion. By promoting a sectional religious financial policy, the Government is violating both the spirit and the letter of Section 10 of the Constitution.

According to a press statement, released to the media from the office of the Special Assistant (Media & Communications) to the CAN President, his eminence, Rev Samson Olasupo A. Ayokunle Ph.D.; Pastor Adebayo Oladeji, the Christian Association of Nigeria has been protesting against this aberration since the Osun State Government, under Governor Rafiu Aregbesola embarked on this violation of the Constitution. Rather than stand in the defense of the Constitution, it is disappointing to note that the Federal Government, is pursuing what is out rightly a confirmation of an Islamization Agenda.

It stated that the recent floating of Sukkuk Bond by the Federal Government is not only sectional but illegal and a violation of the Constitution. Every law that has been promulgated to back the Sukkuk issuance and promote an Islamic banking system in Nigeria is ultra vires, illegal, null and void.
It further read : “Islamic finance is financing which conforms to the doctrines of the Islamic law known as “Shari’a”. The sources of Shari’a (in hierarchical order) are as follows:

“(1). The Qur’an; (2). Sunna (the teachings and practices of The Prophet Muhammad); and (3). Ijtihad and Fiqh (Islamic jurisprudence).
“There has never been a time that Nigerians held a Referendum or convened a Constituent Assembly that passed a resolution that the nation has transmuted into an Islamic State.
“Therefore, the manipulations and scheming to smuggle the country into a full blown Islamic state should stop. These manipulations became apparent with the smuggling of Nigeria into OIC in 1986, by the Ibrahim Babangida Military junta.

Objections of CAN to the Sukkuk Bond are stated below:
1.  “ Funds raised under Sukkuk MUST be used for Shariah compliant (halal) activities. Nigeria is not a Sharia compliant nation, it is a Democratic country. Nigeria cannot operate two National Ideologies.
2.  “ The Sukkuk shall be governed by, and construed in accordance with the laws of the Federal Republic of Nigeria as well as the Islamic Law of Mu’amalatmaliyyah. We insist that there cannot be two laws for one nation.
3.   “ Sukkuk is ASSET BASED banking system unlike the conventional banking that is ASSET BACKED. While under the conventional banking system, the borrower provides collateral to back the loan and retrieves his asset after the loan is redeemed, under Sukkuk, the loan is BASED on an asset which is land and irredeemable. The Sukkuk holder (lender) accepts land as asset on which the loan is based. At no time does the title pass to the customer, nor is it expected to pass. If the customer wishes to retrieve his asset at a later date, a separate agreement has to be drawn up. This in our view, is a sly and treacherous attempt to sell Nigeria to Arab Islamic Nations. It infringes on the sovereignty of Nigeria as the loan giver becomes part owner of the land of the receiver.
4.   “ The operation of Sukkuk is based on Islamic value system and Sharia Jurisprudence. This makes Sukkuk unconstitutional.
5.    “The IMF says that the issuance of Sukkuk by non-Islamic states/countries is a breach of the religious neutrality of the government of such state.

CONCLUSION
“The Federal Government must dismantle all legal and institutional framework established to promote Islamic Financing in Nigeria. The NEW RULES/AMENDMENTS TO THE RULES AND REGULATIONS OF THE SECURITIES AND EXCHANGE COMMISSION, Section 313(6) of the Investments and Securities Act 2007, and all other forms of law guiding operation of Sukkuk issuance in Nigeria should be repealed, forthwith.
“In the alternative, legal redress willl be sought to defend the Sovereignty and territorial integrity of Nigeria if the National Assembly failed to checkmate the Executive on this unconstititional action.
“We affirm that the territorial integrity of Nigeria is undermined through the issuance of Sukkuk in the country. We hope that the Federal Government shall desist in its policies of unbridled religious sectionalism.

However, the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA) has responded to CAN, accusing CAN  of Islamophobia.

In a statement by the Deputy Secretary General of the NSCIA, Salisu Shehu, as reported by Premium Times, he said “CAN cannot claim ignorance about the fact that even the World Bank has been involved in issuing SUKUK and the floating of SUKUK Bonds. Interestingly also, several non-Muslim countries across Africa, Europe and Asia have also instituted Islamic Financial System generally and SUKUK in particular. Worthy of mention here are Kenya, Tanzania, South Africa, United Kingdom, Luxembourg, Russia, China, Singapore and a number of firms in the United States”.

Why CAN Goes Against the Sacked Lagos Chaplain- Ven. Taiwo

There has been so much brouhaha over the removal of the immediate past Presiding Chaplain of the Chapel of Christ the Light, Alausa, Lagos State, by the Governing Council of the Chapel, for his alleged misconduct and disrespect of constituted authorities.

Media reports indicated that the Venerable Femi Taiwo, had disrespected the First Lady of Lagos, Mrs Bolanle  Ambode during an Anointing Service, by making her waited endlessly in a queue before being anointed. Consequently, eyewitnesses said she bolted out of the church service, immediately she was anointed. Twenty hours later, the clergy’s appointment was terminated, and he was evicted from his official apartment.

Thereafter, different criticisms had been trailing the action, attributed to the Lagos State government, but no official response from neither the governor’s office nor that of his wife.
However, the latest and shocking revelation on the matter is the condemnation of the cleric, by the Christian Umbrella body, CAN, which negates the myriads of sympathies he has drawn from members of the public.

Then someone may ask, why did CAN chide him? Could it be that Lagos CAN has compromised its righteous stand for the mammon of Lagos? Is it not an abomination to sack a pastor? Why was the termination of appointment so swift?

Hmmmn…, the barrage of questions is endless, as several supporters of Pastor Taiwo are still fuming against CAN.

The Holy Writ may, however, gives a clue to CAN’s backing of the Governor’s wife. In the Epistle to the Romans 13: 7, it states: “Render therefore to all their dues: tribute to whom tribute is due; custom to whom custom; fear to whom fear; honour to whom honour”.

To CAN, it is TopsyOba’s opinion that the said Venerable might have breached this verse over and over, as some reports have noted, adding that it was the culmination of the violations of this rule that led to his lost of job.

For other men of God in corridors of power, the Scriptures in I Timothy 6: 11 aptly warns: “But thou, O man of God, flee these things; and follow after righteousness, godliness, faith, love, patience, meekness.”
