A PILL to help advanced breast cancer sufferers live longer is out today.
The new drug — which doctors predict will benefit more than 14,000 women — can prevent the killer disease from spreading further.Tests showed Everolimus — also called Afinitor — lengthens life expectancy from four months to a year for patients who are ER positive, the most common form of advanced breast cancer. Dr Rachel Greig, of Breakthrough Breast Cancer, said: “While this is by no means a cure, it could give patients several extra months of good quality of life.”
The drug can be prescribed from this week by health trusts but won’t be widely available until approval by health watchdog NICE. Patients with less common forms of advanced breast cancer are able to take Herceptin.
